Hey guys. I couldn't help but to start a discussion on one of my favorite bodybuilders. I have many, but the person who stands out the most for me, in terms of having a well-balanced, incredibly shredded, massive yet aesthetic physique is none other than Shawn Ray. His philosophy on training is 'Just Do It!'... yes, like Nike. He believes that if someone thinks too much when attempting to accomplish a goal... then they'll at some point start to doubt themselves. Check him out in the photo/video I've posted. I'd like to know what you guys/gals think of him.

great physique, great wprk ethics, he was writing for muscular development magazine every month too, not sure if he still does tho. wasn't he the guy that got stripped of the olympia after random drug testing?
Hey Rodney. Yup. I'm pretty sure he got tested positive for drug use on or around 1990. I think it was during the Arnold Classic. After that incident, he said that he would continue to train naturally and become better than he ever was. He did improve but it's questionable whether or not he remained natural. The year he got tested positive for drug use, I believe it was Mike Ashley who won the Arnold Classic. Mike often said that he was natural. He got tested more than once passing each one. Mike Ashley is one of the bodybuilders I put in the 'Video Trailer' for this website. Here it is:

I find it very hard to believe he's a natural bodybuilder. But even so, to get to that kind of physique is a remarkable acheivement, even if hes using some roids. Definately one fo the best bodybuilder's out there.
i'd never take away from anyones accoplishments no matter how big or little, or natural or not, hard work goes into all areas, roids doesn't make it a cakewalk, just faster. i still believe any hormone enhancer is a scapegoat from putting in the years...that being said most bodybuilders that are known for excessive steroid use like lee preist have still been doing it for over 20 years.....wow mario this is a good discussion, i'm even debating with myself. someone make my mind up for me here..lol
LOL! It is a good discussion. The big issue in bodybuilding is of course the rampid (is that a real word?) use of steroids / growth hormones. I also respect any individual who puts in the work to achieve their goal, but I'm totally against drug use. I have a hard time understanding why most aspiring bodybuilders don't at least try to get big naturally. But like you said Rodney, they may not want to endure all those years of trial & error, being super-disciplined, etc. The Mr.Olympia contenders are obviously the biggest bodybuilders on the planet, and because my goal is to be huge... I often visualize having a similar physique (even though I'm natural). If I focus on looking like the typical natural bodybuilder, for example... then excuse me for saying this, but I haven't set my standards that high. The challenge in life is everything. You can reach your goal... but once again like you said Rodney it takes time.
branch warren, mark alvisi and joel stubbs are my favorites. i am sure all three of them take steroids but they had to lift very hard for a long time regardless.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for Branch Warren because of his perseverance. He isn't the most genetically gifted bodybuilder, yet he has been able to compete with the best of them.

I saw Joel Stubbs at the Montreal Pro Classic a few years ago. He is huge. Great upper body.

Natural, or un-natural, bodybuilding is the most difficult sport. It demands a great deal of discipline... and this I believe, is why it's such a tight-knit community. We're bonded by iron :)
well spoken my friend, the last paragraph is great. joel is cool to talk to. i have had three different conversations with him and he has signed pictures and magazines for me and my daughter.
That's awesome. I'm sure that seeing him up close made quite an impression on you. And it's always nice when the elite in any sport are humbled by their fans. Great story. I hope to hear more.
He shares my exact philosophy - JUST DO IT - I say it 1000 times a day! :-)
It's important to "Just Do It!" even if you don't know why you're doing it sometimes. Focusing on your goals works well... Focusing on the path to achieving those goals works wonders. Something good always comes out of it.

mine has to be one of my best friends called andrew merrifield he helped get to where i am now
