I'm 45 and I've been working out pretty much all my teenage/adult life.  I've never really been out of shape, but I've never reached my ideal either, so I keep working on it.  I don't have the muscle mass I want, but at least I don't have 50-100lbs to lose like so many of the men my age have.  Thank goodness for that.

Hey B.J. You're in incredible shape for your age. I've seen some of your pics and you've got that ripped six-pack abs look that so many people want... Is this something that's all-year round, or do you occasionally diet for periods of 12 weeks or so?
Thanks for the compliment,

I'd say that the six-pack thing is year round. If I put some fat on I usually lose it within a few days, I never diet for long periods of time. That said I try to eat right all the time, though I don't have very good self control so I end up eating too much junk food.

In the past twenty some years the most I have weighed is about 8 lbs. more than I do now.
just joined this forum. i am 44 and in pretty good shape but like you just want to add more muscle. what kind of workout are you doing.

I think the key to gaining muscle is to lift heavy and get out of the gym in 60 min or less. Testosterone falls after 60-90 min in clinical studies. Train each muscle group, for the most part only once every 7days. Eat well and regular, 5-6times a day. Take a good vitamin, not the typical OTC or GNC kind. Exercise increased oxidation or free radicals.  Take L-glutamine. The journal of clinical nutrition did a study with 2.5gm doses and increase HGH release by 443%!!! This is a natural suppliment and is clinically proven even in clinical medicine! I too am over 40 now 41 to be exact. I am 5'11" and around 225#. The other day I finished my squats with 405 for 12 reps free weights. Who said you had to grow old as you age!! Muscle grows not with just doing alot of sets and reps, but when you go to the point of temp. failure. Lots of reps and sets over trains. KISS keep it simple.

Well I'm 48 and I've been training since I was 19 and I think that you have a passion and you keep doing what you love, I know in the 29 years that I have been in the gym I had my shares of up and downs, set backs, injuries and I still keep coming back, now as far as you mass you want to stay with the basics: bench press, sqauts.deadlifts and I have notice since I'm older that muscle density is alot more noticeble than when I was in my twenties. And I agree with Chris Bliss keep your work out 60 min or less and I do take L-glutiamine, at this stage in the game it about recovery so you can still get in the gym and train, I'm 6'2" and I weigh 280# and tonight I dead- lifted 425# for eight reps and I leg pressed 475# for 15 reps  so you see even when those young bucks talk about the dust on my hair(my gray) but none can keep up the pace, and when squat none them want to play.  So I say keep your work out simple eat clean, use basic supplmens that are proven I like dessicated liver and Krealklynn, Beta Alinine and L-argine for pre w/o talk about a good pump, the most inmportant thing I would say is GET YOUR REST. that where growth come in. So any one who over 40 just remember be stronger than dirt!

Well, I posted this thread almost two years ago and it is still the only thread in this over 40 section.  I am now 47 and still going.

Congratulations to all of the over forty here.  Keep it up and post more.

BJ,

I think we can get something started here because I know there are some over 40 someones who can still bring it  and I'm proud to say at 49 I'm still at it and I still love training and when some young pup want nip, I can snap it out I tell the young one in the gym do not let the dust on the bottle fool you cause still 101% proof!

You are on the other end of the muscle spectrum from me.  You can left massive weight.  For me to show off in font of younger guys I have to do a bunch of pull ups or push ups or something like that that a lot of guys, especially heavier guys can't do well.

How true, but it still fun, when those young'ns think your washed up and you have there mouths open when they are shocked at what you can do
